2012 Writing Contest

This writing competition for high school students is open to teens in grades 9-12.  Get your creative juices going and participate!

Competition Logistics:

  1. This writing competition is for high school students who have read the 2012 CNY READS selection, The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak.
  2. Writing must be your original work of fiction, not to exceed 1000 words
  3. Writing must be submitted electronically
  4. Writing must be double spaced, in an 8.5 x 11 format with 1 inch margins. Use either Arial or Times New Roman 12 pt. font.
  5. You must have a COVER SHEET SEPARATE FROM THE PAPER that includes the following in this order:
  • Name
  • School of attendance
  • English teacher or school librarian
  • E-mail address
  • Telephone number
  • Cover sheet and writing must be submitted electronically as a PDF e-mail attachment to:  kosmond@onlib.org.  Put CNY Reads Writing Contest in the subject line.  
  • Submit no later than midnight, March 17, 2012.  LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED


Answer the following question by creating your own work of fiction,
not to exceed 1,000 words.  

Writing Prompt:

A. Create a Zusak-style piece by writing with the character, Death, as the narrator.  Use the same premise and point of view as is found in The Book Thief. 

B. Writing must begin and end with the sentences that have been provided below.  Your story will be contained between these two sentences. The two sentences are your ‘bookends’.

BEGINNING SENTENCE:    The question is: what color will everything be at that moment when I (Death) come for you?

ENDING SENTENCE:     A last note from your narrator – I am haunted by humans.
