Steal Away Kick-Off Event

Join readers from across Central New York as CNY READS ONE BOOK kicks off its 2012 season! Enjoy excerpts from The Book Thief read by local personalities, then stay for refreshments and a chance to win a copy of the book. Entertainment will be provided by accordionist Judy Schmid and artist J.P. Crangle. Readers will include County Executive Joanne Mahoney, Sean Kirst, Bruce Coville, Kate Montgomery, Alex Dunbar and Frank Fiumano.
The free event will be held at the DeWitt Barnes and Noble store on Thursday, January 12, from 7 – 8 p.m. Everyone is invited!

Join a discussion of The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak. Learn about the CNY Reads program and share in discussions of the book's themes. Set during World War II, the novel focuses on Liesel Meminger and how her life changes when she discovers an abandoned book. With the help of her foster father, she learns to read and begins a love affair with books and words. Stealing from Nazi book-burnings, the mayor's wife's library, and anywhere she can, Liesel pursues her adventures. However, as death narrates, situations grow dangerous and escalate.
Those who have read The Book Thief can enrich their experience by sharing insights. Those who haven't read the book are also welcome to attend to preview the work's main ideas. Writing Contest

Book Making Workshop

Ages Teens to Adults are encouraged to participate in an accordion book making workshop, facilitated by Peter D. Verheyen, bookbinder, conservator and manager of the Department of Preservation at Syracuse University. Look for his exhibits online.
