Syracuse University students to promote CNY Reads campaign.

ETS 151 Interpretation of Poetry and the CNY Reads campaign is excited to present an event to inspire students to be creative through poetry.

“Poetry Palooza” will be held 2 to 5 p.m. Monday Nov. 24 at the north wall of Syracuse University’s Schine Student Center, 303 University Place. Five sophomores will host this event under the watch of their poetry professor, Harvey Teres.

This determined group of five hopes to encourage creativity by allowing students to write distinctive poems on four micro-fridges using word magnets. The poetry class will choose the best poem and its author will receive a $75 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble.

The CNY Reads program is encouraging Central New Yorkers to read U.S. poet laureate Charles Simic’s “60 poems.”

Selected poems from Simic’s collection will be read at the event. The University Bookstore is offering “60 poems” for sale to support the campaign.

Poetry Palooza also will feature interactive games, such as match the poem to its famous author, and participants will be given candy and other prizes.

Starting in 2001, Central New York’s cultural, educational and social service organizations have collaborated to endorse Central New York Reads. The consortium has about 50 participants representing local organizations including Syracuse University.

The campaign promotes reading, research and discovery among local citizens, who read the same book and participate in related programs.

This is the first year since 2001 that CNY Reads selected a collection of poems.
