Web Privacy Policy
Protecting the privacy of the very young is especially important to us. Parents are responsible for supervising their children’s use of the Internet, especially when a child wishes to give out personal information online.
Parents and children are strongly encouraged to read SafeKids.com: Internet safety & civility for kids & parents and SafeTeens.Com: Internet safety for teens together. In particular, the sections Guidelines for Parents, My Rules for Internet Safety, and Basic Rules of Online Safety for Teens provide important assistance in helping minors to be safe while using the Internet.
The personal information requested on our web site is sent directly to an internal database accessible only by staff or directly to a pertinent staff member’s email account. Information collected by the Onondaga County Public Library is not shared with any other agency or organization, except under the limited circumstances set below.
The library does not disclose or distribute users’ names, postal addresses, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, borrower records, computer use records or other personal information to outside parties unless required to do so pursuant to subpoena, court order or where otherwise required by law.
Compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)
As a non-profit agency, OCPL is not subject to the provisions of COPPA. However we want to inform users about it. OCPL encourages parents and teachers to be involved in children's Internet activities and to provide guidance whenever children are asked to provide personal information online.
Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA) went into effect on April 21, 2000. It places parents in control over what information is collected from their children while online. The law applies to operators of commercial Web sites and online services directed to children under 13 that collect personal information from children, and operators of general audience sites with actual knowledge that they are collecting information from children under 13. On our Web site we do not knowingly collect information from children under the age of 13.
