Born to Read

BORN TO READ

BORN TO READ is a community-wide collaboration, in partnership with the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County, linking together early childhood literacy services in Onondaga County.  Many agencies are partnering together in an effort to help parents to prepare their children to read.

Parents can begin at birth to help children learn important pre-reading skills. The library can suggest what to read and how to read to young children so they get the most from the experience. There are books, programs and other resources available at your library to help you prepare your children for reading success.

Give your children a lifelong advantage. Read to them often, and ask today about how your library can help you to get your children ready to read.

Choose From the Following Resources and take a look at the six pre-reading skills listed below.

Did you know that from birth there are SIX pre-reading skills
your child can start learning?

They are:

      1  Knowing words and their meaning

      2  Enjoying books;

      3  Noticing printed words;

      4  Describing things and events;

      5  Hearing the smaller sounds in words;

      6  Knowing the names and sounds of letters

These skills will prepare your child for learning to read. You can help your young child develop these skills. Most children are BORN TO READ!
