TeenWork - Autumn 2008

Black Joy
(In the tradition of Langston Hughes)

Joy is being able to get a free education.
Joy is being a part of this Nation.
Joy is living one day at a time.
Joy is waking up thanking God you’re alive.
Joy is being happy, smelling the fresh air.
Joy is playing with white kids and nobody cares.
Joy is having fun going to the same stores.
Joy is sitting in front of the bus without being thrown to the floor.

- Raven McKelvin, grade 9
