TeenWork - Spring 2008

The Dirt

She locks the door
He’s back for more
He is swift as a monkey in a tree
Pounding, yelling gets the key
She sobs, leave me be

Her mom is on a moonshine nap
She hears the lock turn snap
She tries to stop it
He then goes to hit

She cries about the bruises
She tells her teachers lies and excuses
He still will come
His dirt is never done

This time when he comes in
Her mom is gone to get some gin
She has a gun
Now his dirt is done

Bang in the head
The dirt is dead
She cries out
His blood is red
The dirt was hurting and messing about

Though he’s done
The dirt is the one
What the dirt gives

Pain, abuse, hurt and her childhood
It will never be good
Because the dirt will never be swept under the rug
Her mom will never stop the
Chug, chug, chug

She can live in peace
With a new family
New life, no dirt
No alcohol, no pain
Love and trust is what she’ll gain

- Courtney Howe, grade 7
