The Onondaga County/ Syracuse Commission on Human Rights was founded in 1963 by then Mayor William Walsh. At formation the Commission was founded as a Syracuse organization, but in 1965 it was expanded to include all of Onondaga County. It's mission is to foster understanding among residents and lessen human rights and discriminatory tension in the community. Scope and Contents of the Collection

A wide range of people (approximately 70) were interviewed about their personal Human Rights experiences between the years 1963-1983. These people include those involved in civil rights in Onondaga County, who participated in demonstrations and equal rights meetings. These people made individual accomplishments locally and nationally.

The interviews were recorded on cassette tapes. Included are typed transcripts of some on the interviews. There are also handwritten keys to quotes for some interviews. Not all tapes in the collection are transcribed or have keys to quotes.
