CNY Reads Selects March
The community-reading program, CNY Reads, has announced its 2009/2010 selection, the Pulitzer-Prize winning and internationally bestselling novel March, by Geraldine Brooks. This account of the Civil War is told from the point of view of Captain March, father of the well-known Little Women in Louisa May Alcott’s famous classic of the same title.
CNY Reads emphasizes community building and March was selected from a list of 10 nominations, because it provides opportunities to partner with community organizations such as Syracuse Opera and their May production of “Little Women,” and Syracuse Stage which is producing the musical “Little Women” from November 24 through December 27. Friends of the Central Library is bringing Geraldine Brooks to speak November 10 as part of the Rosamond Gifford Lecture series. There will also be many opportunities to work with historical associations to tie in with the Civil War theme.
CNY Reads sponsored numerous events in honor of last year’s selection, Sixty Poems by Charles Simic. The programs, which concluded with a reading by Charles Simic at the Central Library on April 16, included lectures at Syracuse University, readings at the Downtown Writer’s Center and Poetry Paloozas at which the public was invited to create poems on refrigerators using magnetic letters. In addition, high school students submitted entries for the CNY Reads Writing and Poetry Contest, and winners were announced at the April 16 program.
CNY Reads promotes reading, research, discovery, and a sharing of perspectives among Central New Yorkers by encouraging them to read the same book and participate in programs related to the content and themes of that book. Onondaga County Public Library leads the CNY Reads consortium, which comprises representatives from Syracuse University, Oasis, the Literacy Coalition, Downtown Writers Center and other Central New York cultural, educational, and social service organizations.
