Life & Works of L.M. Montgomery:
Creator of Anne of Green Gables
*** This Guide is No Longer Being Actively Maintained ***
by Joanne Trask, Librarian
Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) was raised by maternal grandparents in the small village of Cavendish on Canada’s Prince Edward Island. Her fond memories of growing up in Cavendish inspired her to create one of the world’s most lovable characters, Anne Shirley. Anne is better known as “Anne of Green Gables” the spunky red-haired heroine of eight novels created by Montgomery. By the time of the 100th anniversary of the original book’s publication, it had been translated into 36 languages and had sold over 50 million copies. The story has been dramatized on stage, screen and television since 1919, with new productions released in 2008.
In addition the 8 “Anne” books, Montgomery has published 12 other novels and over 500 short stories and an equal number of poems.
Although she is best known as an author, Montgomery spent time as a journalist, a church organist and a photographer.
