Public
libraries are the intellectual soul of a community.
They offer a breadth and depth of learning that no
other institution can provide, fulfilling the needs
of an entire community.
Our libraries embody the American spirit of a free education available to all citizens. Benjamin Franklin began the first subscription library in Philadelphia in 1731. A hundred years later the first free public libraries began to appear. Now, our local governments are tightening their purse strings as they try to spread limited dollars over expanding needs.
The Central Libraryin the Galleries, 447 South Salina Street, in the heart of downtown Syracusehas become a friend in need. Membership in the Friends of the Central Library (FOCL) is a way to strengthen our commitment to a free public library. During its first year of operation, Friends of the Central Library raised more than $35,000 through memberships, grants and gifts. Your friendship and contributions will help us do more to preserve the intellectual soul of Onondaga County.
