The Position
Reporting to an eleven member County-appointed Board of Trustees, the Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the operations of a NYS Federated Library System. This includes the operation of the Central Library, eight branches, and libraries in two community centers.  This position also oversees the services to eighteen independent public libraries in Onondaga County. The Executive Director will be expected to maintain and build collaborative partnerships with City, County, and State officials, member libraries, and community organizations.

Qualifications
This position requires an ALA accredited MLS degree and a minimum of 8 years of satisfactory professional library experience in libraries or systems of libraries, including at least 3 years in an administrative capacity. The successful candidate will possess a proven track record building partnerships, managing budgets, fundraising, community involvement, customer-focused service philosophy, familiarity with library technology, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.  The position requires County residency and possession of a New York State public librarian’s professional certificate at time of appointment.

Compensation
Salary:  $85,000 - $110,000.

Onondaga County Public Library
Serving a countywide population of 457,000, the Onondaga County Public Library is comprised of a Central Library, funded by Onondaga County, 8 branches and libraries in 2 community centers within and funded by the city of Syracuse. In addition, OCPL provides services to 18 independent public libraries within Onondaga County. The Onondaga County Public Library has a staff of 251 (120 full-time and 131 part-time) and a 2008 operating budget of $13.1 million.  Total countywide 2007 annual circulation of library materials is 4.4 million, including 1.3 million within the Central Library and city branches.

The Community
Located in Central New York State, the City of Syracuse is within a day’s drive of New York City, Boston, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Montreal, Toronto, as well as, the Thousand Islands, Adirondack Mountains, Niagara Falls, and Finger Lakes regions of New York State. Area residents enjoy a variety of college and professional sports, abundant natural resources, activity-oriented winter and summer sports and the amenities of a large urban area without many of the drawbacks.  Work commutes are minimal, housing is reasonable and schools and cultural attractions are top-notch.
