Mission
The Onondaga County Public Library's Adult Literacy Program offers a variety of materials and services in support of our mission to assist our adult learners in becoming "information literate," and to help them on a path to lifelong learning. Information literacy includes:
Instruction
Computer software programs that help adults learn English and improve reading, writing and speaking skills are available for use at the Central Library. Literacy staff conduct short training sessions on the software programs and other library resources during regularly scheduled computer labs or by appointment. Conversation groups are also offered, for those who wish to practice their English speaking and listening skills. Adults who wish to improve their literacy skills may call (315) 435-1835 for details and session times. |

For Tutors
The Literacy Resource Center also offers instructional books and videos for literacy and ESL teachers and tutors, as well as access to a VCR for viewing literacy-related tapes (by appointment). Tutors will find many helpful ideas for instruction, including blackline masters of worksheets for their learners.
Literacy Software
Located in the Literacy Resource Center are two computers loaded with software for the use of our literacy clients. Programs include phonics practice, learning English as a second language, and other reading and listening skills. A short training session is required first. Call (315) 435-1835 for details.
Collections
| The Literacy Resource Center (Central Library, Level 4) contains a large collection of Adult New Reader (ANR) and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESL) materials including books, videos and audiotapes. The collection primarily serves adults who read English at or below grade 6 reading level. On request, these may be sent to any branch or member library in Onondaga County. Call (315) 435-1900 for information on availability. The OCPL Literacy Program conducts Central Library tours for Basic Literacy and ESL classes and groups. |

Neighborhood Literacy Resources
Some literacy materials and services are available at branch and member libraries. Several libraries have small collections of literacy books, kits and videos. A few offer computers and software. Most of these collections were created or expanded through Federal Library Services & Technology Act funds, awarded to The New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum & Library Services.
Hazard Branch (1620 W. Genesee St., Syracuse 13204) has a collection of materials to borrow as well as a dedicated computer and literacy software for use by tutors and their learners. Software titles include TOEFL Study Guide, Focus on Grammar, Working Phonics, English Your Way, and Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing. Patrons are encouraged to call the branch at 315-484-1528 to reserve time on the computer. If tutors and learners need instruction on using the computer they may call the Adult Literacy
Program at the Central Library.
