ABOUT THE LIBRARY
Paine Branch Library was originally
the Eastwood Library, and became part of the Syracuse
Public Library when Eastwood was annexed in 1926,
when it became the Eastwood Branch. It was located
at 101 Nichols Ave., which was later renumbered to
113. The branch moved temporarily into a store on
James Street in 1957, while the old building on Nichols
was demolished, and a new one built on the same site.
On March 19, 1958 the present facility was opened
with ceremonies, and named the Paul Mayo Paine Branch.
Dr. Paine was a newspaperman and librarian, and was
Director of the Syracuse Public Library from 1915-1942.
Paine keeps close ties with the Eastwood community, working closely with the schools, the Chamber of Commerce, local businesses, nonprofit agencies and is a participant in Tomorrow's Neighborhoods Today. Look for us in the annual Eastwood Columbus Day Parade.
Paine also maintains a collection of print and media materials for children and adults, has PCs with printers and Internet access and Microsoft Office software for public use. A photocopier is available at 10 cents a copy.
The library has a unique collection of a few historical materials on the Eastwood community including: Eastwood High School history and yearbooks, World War II era newsletters sent to servicemen and their "v-mail" responses and Paine Branch Library scrapbooks.
Children's story hour and other programs are a regular feature at Paine. The library has no meeting room, but community groups use the facility regularly.
