OCPL’s May Art Exhibits

 

SYRACUSE, NY — Onondaga County Public Libraries are welcoming the season as artwork is springing up in most of our branches!

Hazard Branch library, located at 1620 West Genesee Street in Syracuse, exhibits the watercolors and acrylics of Dan Kishman.  Call 484-1528 for more information.

Soule Branch library, located at 101 Springfield Road in Syracuse, welcomes the Onondaga Art Guild.  Mardea Warner, Syracuse based artist and community organizer, returns to her fiber art roots to explore the functional aesthetic inherent in wearable art.  There will be a closing reception on Tuesday, May 27, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  Join area artists for a lively discussion about the creative spirit and personal adornment.  Call 449-4300 for more information.

White Branch library, located at 763 Butternut Street in Syracuse, hosts the artwork of John O’Neal Heard.  His exhibit, Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time, is comprised of authentic works of art in painted glass pieces.  This 1000 year art form originated in Asia.  The artist has been painting for 10 years and has been a local musician for 30 years.  Paintings are made from recycled materials.  Call 435-3519 for more information.

Mundy Branch library, located at 1204 South Geddes Street in Syracuse, displays the photography exhibit, FACES: Mission Africa 2007.  Enjoy the images of native children and wild animals photographed in Africa by Lorraine Goldych.  Call 435-3797 for more information.

Betts Branch library, located at 4862 South Salina Street in Syracuse, features the artwork of Corcoran Art Students.  Another year brings another wonderful art exhibit from the talented students of teachers Bob Shenfeld, Keith Penney and Megan Connor of Corcoran High School.  The exhibit will be on display throughout the month of May.  Call 435-1940 for more information.

Central library, located in The Galleries of Syracuse at 447 South Salina Street, invites you to enjoy the selected landscapes of Jim Simmons.  A native of Syracuse, Simmons graduated from Onondaga Valley Academy in 1965 and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1965-1969 in Philadelphia.  He currently lives and maintains a studio in rural southeastern Pennsylvania.  He travels and paints on location and does large canvases in the studio.  His repertoire includes sweeping vistas from Adirondack mountain tops and more intimate views of field and stream.

“The landscape reveals patterns of light and shadow.  Color, texture and atmosphere combine to create a sense of place.  This essence provides a marvelous well of inspiration from which to draw.” Jim Simmons

Paine Branch library, located at 113 Nichols Ave in Syracuse, features the artwork of Tiffany (O’Brien) Gratien.  Tiffany displays her black and white photos of cityscapes.  Call 435-5442 for more information.

Petit Branch library, located at 105 Victoria Place in Syracuse, presents Fresh Sight Photography by R.L. Mercer throughout the month of May. 

“Landscapes, abstractions, reflections, rhythmic patterns and textures inspire me.  Blends of colors, and materials and the natural bending of reflections distorting them fire my imagination.  Yet still, if you look carefully, you can see all the images within.”  R.L. Mercer
