April 22, 2008 — FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SYRACUSE, NY — Onondaga County becomes home to 400-600 new refugees each year. The immigration process is often a mystery. We may wonder how we can best support our new neighbors in building homes in our community. On Wednesday, May 7, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., the Onondaga County Public Library is sponsoring a program entitled, Coming to America What Must it be Like. The event will take place at the Manlius Library located at 1 Arkie Albanese Ave. Refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m.
The program was developed especially for tutors who are working with students from foreign countries but is open to the public. Hope Wallis, Director of The Center for New Americans, will present a short film entitled, Don’t Look Back and she will describe the refugee immigration process in our community. Topics to be covered include: steps involved in coming to the United States, agencies and community groups that support refugees and immigrants, employment for refugees and immigrants, and services available for newcomers to the US.
Pre-registration is not required but is appreciated. For registration or questions please contact Amy Thorna, Adult Literacy Coordinator for the OCPL, at 435-1835. This program is free of charge.
