Teen Works

Jungle Shadows

Musty and misty
A scent arose
Like old moss
Rich and luscious
Wild and free

Twisted and twirled
Trunks of trees
Erupted from the ground
Solemn and grand
Sturdy and sound

Keen and unseen
Birds of the jungle
With feathers of night
Wise and cunning
Wary and sly

Shimmering and simmering
Pools of bronze where
Sunlight reaches through the trees
Luxurious and tempting
Warm and deceiving

Curious and furious
A pair of hungry eyes
Watch from the shadows
Ready and predatory
Lithe and quick

Yet I stay in this jungle
Where the cunning and the stunning
Are all around me
I do not run
I do not hide

I dare not wander to the open plains
For I know
That danger lurks
Where there is only sunshine
And no shadow
