Constellations: Winter in the Northern Hemisphere - Maryellen Tighe

This exhibit is a collection of origami stars. Some pieces highlight more famous constellations, which viewers will be able to identify without much work. Others may be less popular, or less bright, northern constellations, which the viewer will have to imagine the shape of. The labels are images from Urania's Mirror, star charts published in 1824 and now in the public domain, which also illustrate shapes around the stars. This project invites people who haven't had the chance this season to stand outside on a cold, clear evening with a new moon to look up and take a breath.

From the artist: I like working with paper, whether it's gluing things together, cutting things out or folding things up. These stars are a modular pattern, made out of six pieces that my friend showed me more than a decade ago and I've just kept making them. More of them can be found wherever the cats have carried them to in my Eastwood home, or on Instagram @MeltOrigami .
