Administrative History

Citizens of Onondaga County created a branch of the ASCPA in 1883. They named their
organization the Onondaga County Branch of the American Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals. The branch began as a reaction to animal cruelty in Onondaga
County. Activities such as cock fighting and poor treatment of the Erie Canal mules,
livestock and pets were cited as reasons to create this axillary branch of the
ASCPA in Onondaga County.

The Onondaga County Branch of the ASCAP provided a means to ensure the protection of
animals by enforcing all laws meant to protect them. The ASCPA hired personnel to
enforce these laws, securing by lawful means the arrest, conviction and punishment
of all persons violating the laws that protect animals.

The Onondaga County Branch of the ASCAP in known today as the Central New York SPCA.
They continue to enforce the laws meant to protect animals. The Central New York
SPCA educates the citizens of the Central New York area in proper treatment and care
of animals. They also house and care for stray cats and dogs, and make them
available for adoption. Additionally they have a pet food pantry, and a service to
connect missing pets with their owners.
