This collection consists of field
books, day books and diaries chronicling the efforts of volunteers to preserve,
restore and rebuild the Chittenango Landing Dry Dock Complex and Museum. These notes
date from 1958 to 2007.
Biographical History
The Chittenango Landing Dry Dock Complex was built in 1856 to provide a dry dock for
canal boats traveling on the Erie Canal. The complex was constructed along the Erie
Canal, north of the village of Chittenango. Canal boats were built and repaired at
the dry dock. The site was abandoned in 1917 when this section of the Erie Canal was
bypassed by the new barge canal.
A group of dedicated volunteers worked to restore this abandoned site. They were able
to clear the land, restore the dry dock and rebuild the buildings as they had been
in the mid 1800's through the early 1900's. The Chittenango Landing Canal Boat
Museum was created. These workers documented their efforts in field guides, day books
and diaries from 1958 through 2007.
Scope and Contents of the Collection
This collection consists of field guides, day books and diaries kept by the workers
who helped to preserve, restore and rebuild the Chittenango Dry Dock Complex and
create the Chittenango Landing Boat Museum, spanning the years 1958-2007.

The papers in this collection are arranged in the order they were received from the
Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum. This order was preserved in the
inventory.
