Biographical History

The Cotton Collection of Canal Papers was given to the Syracuse Public Library in
March of 1921 by George G. Cotton. Cotton lived for most of his life in Onondaga
County and was prominent in the Republican Party. He was born in Illinois, but moved
to Geddes when he was a small boy. He attended Porter School and the Syracuse High
School, and worked in various manufacturing jobs as a young man. In 1880 Cotton was
appointed index clerk in the Onondaga County clerk’s office, and later was elected
county clerk, taking office in 1889. Cotton was removed from office in 1891 for
refusing to issue an election certificate for a candidate he believed was elected in
error. Cotton then worked at Warners Portland Cement and then Solvay Process
Company, where he retired in 1921.
