        <bioghist encodinganalog="545">
            <head>Biographical History</head>
            <p>Frank T. Wood, Jr. came to Syracuse, NY in the early 1950's, and became involved in
                the community through both his employment and many social causes. Frank Wood Jr. was
                educated as a social worker. Wood used these skills in his work at the Dunbar
                Center, the United Way, and Onondaga County, where he retired as the director of the
                county's Research and Public Information. He was also the chairman of the United
                Negro College Fund, the President of the NY Chapter of the National Association of
                Social Workers, served as the White House Conference of Children and Youth, and was
                a member of the State Commission on Human Rights. Wood was active in many other
                religious and political organizations that were focused on the betterment of the
                community, and won countless awards for his service to his community and his fellow
                man. </p>
            <p>Peggy Wright Wood was born in Florida and came to Syracuse in the early 1950's with
                her husband Frank T. Wood, Jr. Peggy Wood had a degree in social work and worked as
                the Director of Social Work for the Salvation Army and as director of Public Health
                Social Work at the Onondaga County Department of Public Health. While at the county,
                Wood initiated the Young Women's Educational Development Program (YMED). Peggy Wood
                was very involved in the Syracuse community, and was active in the Central New York
                Community Foundation, New York State Crime Control Planning Board, Central New York
                United Negro College Fund, Syracuse Urban League, among many. Wood has received
                numerous award for her community service, and also wrote the book "Something Must be
                Done: One Black Woman's Story." Her work as a social worker and community activist
                has had a lasting impact on the Syracuse community.</p>
            <p>Peggy W. Wood and Frank T. Wood, Jr. worked often as a team. They participated
                together in many community causes, and were often honored together. The Urban League
                presented them with the Harriet Tubman Community Service Award in 1985, and in 1988
                they both received the Syracuse Area Interrelious Council's Interreligious
                Leadership Award. Other awards include those by the United Negro College Fund,
                Public Broadcasting Council of Central New York, Dunbar Center, Partners of the
                Americas, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Iota Kappa Lambda Chapter, Delta Sigma
                Theta, Inc. Syracuse Alumnae Chapter, Cooperative Extension Association of Onondaga
                County, Syracuse Chamber of Commerce, Junior League of Syracuse, Lambada Kappa Mu
                Sorority, Inc. Xi Chapter, East Side Cooperative Council and the Thursday Morning
                Roundtable. They both believed in giving back to their community and lived by that
                belief.</p>

            <head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
            <p>The collection comprises material about Frank T. Wood, Jr, and Peggy W. Wood, and
                their work as social workers and community activists during the time they lived in
                Syracuse, NY. The issues they worked on ranged from health care to housing to racial
                equality and religion. This collection reflects the many causes and issues that were
                important to the Woods', and chronicles their work in making Syracuse at better
                place to live.</p>
            <p>Series 1: This series contains biographical material on Frank T. Wood, Jr. and Peggy
                W. Wood. Included is information on Peggy and Frank Woods' work life and their
                participation in school, community, and religious organizations. It includes
                biographical sketches, newspaper articles, photographs, certificates and awards. The
                date coverage is from 1957-2011.</p>
            <p>Series 2: This series includes selected writing of Frank T. Wood, Jr. and Peggy W.
                Wood, and those articles and publications by others that they saved in their files.
                These publications range from articles written about topics relating to work and to
                the social issues of the time. The date coverage is from 1944-1979.</p>
            <p>Series 3: The series includes information collected by the Woods' on various
                Syracuse, New York organizations and events, and images of the city of Syracuse. The
                organizations and events are ones that the Woods' were involved with, including the
                community and religious organizations. The images of Syracuse include the building
                of the Civic Center and the Galleries of Syracuse, and many buildings in the
                Syracuse area, covering the dates 1952-1981.</p>

            <head>Arrangement of the Collection</head>
            <p>The collection is arranged into series based on broad subject categories. Series are
                further divided into subseries, specifying particular publications, organizations,
                and events. Within each subseries, items are arranged into folders by form or genre
                (correspondence, clippings, color slides etc.).</p>
