Biographical History

In 1847 New York State passed a law for births, marriages and deaths to be kept. This law lasted five years and was never renewed. Many towns stopped keeping the records before the law lapsed in 1851. In 1880 a new law was passed and from 1881 to 1885 most towns’ vital records began. Few of the early vital records remain. Those remaining records from selected towns in Onondaga County from 1847-1849 have been microfilmed and are included in this collection. In addition, early naturalization, immigration and military records are included.

This microfilm includes vital records for selected towns in Onondaga County for the years 1847-1849, Admissions to Citizenship, Immigration and Naturalization Records for Onondaga County, and Military Records for the Town of Cicero for the Bureau of Military Records.

Series 1: Vital Records, Births, Marriages, Deaths

This series contains Vital Records for Births, Marriages and Deaths for the year 1847-1849 for various towns in Onondaga County.

Series 2: Admissions to Citizenship

This category includes admission to citizenship for the year 1856

Series 3: Immigration and Naturalization for Onondaga County

This series includes records of immigration and naturalization for Onondaga County for the years 1802-1859.

Series 4: Military Records

This series includes military records of the Town of Cicero for the Bureau of Military Records: Town of Marcellus.
