Biographical History

The Syracuse Peace Council (SPC), officially founded on March 1, 1936, was originally
formed to be a local forum with representatives from a variety of civic and
religious organizations meeting regularly to share ideas and information on ways to
work for world peace. The Council was created in response to Frederick Libby’s
Emergency Peace Campaign (EPC) in 1935, which was established to confront the United
States Governments efforts to prepare the nation for war. The Syracuse Peace Council
was to become part of the nationwide network of Peace Councils that the EPC was
hoping to establish. It was in 1936 that the Syracuse Peace Council's first
newsletter, Peace Newsletter, was published and by 1937 the monthly newsletter was
mailed to over 1,600 people. The Syracuse Peace Council established a threefold
mission; to establish a continuing program of peace education; to provide ongoing
financial support to local and national peace efforts; to establish a program of
peace action through democratic methods. This beginning laid the foundation for the
education and activism that has lasted in Syracuse for over 75 years, and is
chronically in the Peace Newsletter.
