New York State Rural Farm Registers were published from 1937-1940 by Rural Surveys, Inc. of Ithaca, New York. These rural registers were published for the 29 counties in New York State and were a directory of all the farms in those counties with corresponding maps to show their locations.

 Scope and Contents of the Collection

This collection contains registers of rural areas in New York State from 1936-1940. The registers include the names of the head of each family, if the person is married, the "Compass System" address of each entry listed, and coordinates for finding the farm's location on an accompanying map.

Each register was issued in 3 different versions with the same map accompanying each. The Rural Guide (sometimes called the Rural Index) provides names of farmers, the "Compass System" address of each one, and coordinates for finding the person on the map. The Rural Register (sometimes called the Farm Register) adds the postal address for each person listed. The Special Classified Rural Register includes the number of persons living in each home and other information on each farm.
