Biographical History

The Sedgwick Hazard Library Club was a women’s organization founded in December 1931. This club belonged to the Federation of Women’s Clubs. The ladies got together to share book reviews and to listen to speakers from different fields. The club’s speakers included university professors, social workers, politicians, civil leaders, artists, musicians, as well as members of the club who had traveled abroad.

The club was also an active philanthropic organization. In order to raise money for their charitable endeavors, the women of the Sedgwick Hazard Library Club hosted card parties, rummage sales, bake sales, and solicited donations. They used the money raised to help groups such as Community Chest, Girl Scouts, residents at the County home, and to add to the Hazard Library’s book and magazine collection.

The Sedgwick Hazard Library Club was active in expressing political views for and against proposed legislation, existing laws, and problems they felt needed attention by writing and signing petitions.

 Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Sedgwick Hazard Library Club Papers contain materials produced by the club from its inception in 1931 until its end in 2006. The collection includes bylaws, constitutions, minutes, correspondence, newspaper clippings, event fliers, kitchen inventory, due lists, membership and attendance lists, photographs, film, and a brief history. The contents of this collection are sporadic; not all the years that the club was active are represented.

 Arrangement of the Collection

The collection is arranged into series based on broad subject categories like history, bylaws, membership, correspondence, events and club minutes. The folders within these series are arranged in chronological order. This collection is arranged as close to the original order it was in when donated.

Use Restrictions

User must use materials in the Local History and Genealogy Department of OCPL.Permission must be obtained from staff for reproduction of any materials.
