Victory mail or V-Mail is a method
used during the World War II to deliver military letters overseas. The V-Mail
correspondences were of standard page format with a box on the top for the
receiver’s address. The letters were written by the soldiers, then censored,
photocopied to a 16-mm black and white camera film and shipped to the addressee’s
location. In the processing center the V-Mails were printed on to paper and then
sent to recipients. This method became significantly useful for delivering letters
and saving cargo space at the same time.
Biographical History
Zelda L. Stockham is the author of “A History of Eastwood High School”. After her
graduation she became the Eastwood High School secretary and she served for 43
years. She died in 1990, at 85 years old. She had incredible influence among the
students and the Eastwood community. In 1955 she was awarded “Eastwood – Woman of
the Year”. After her retirement in 1966, she continued to contribute to the Eastwood
society by assisting with high school reunions and keeping up with Eastwood High
School graduates.
Scope and Contents of the Collection
Zelda Stockham’s V-Mail Collection is a collection of letters sent to Miss Stockham
by her former students from Eastwood High School, Syracuse, NY, who were in service
throughout World War II. During the war, Zelda Stockham published a newsletter (May
6, 1943 – January 29, 1946) called “Good News”(LN48 Sy8 Eheagn), which was mailed to
all Eastwood servicemen around the world. The newsletter contained information about
current local events and information listing mailing addresses of others in the
community. “Good News” was very popular and highly appreciated by the servicemen,
who expressed their sincere gratitude to Ms. Stockham in the V-Mails.
Arrangement of the Collection
This collection is arranged in alphabetical order starting with the last name of the
sender followed by the first name and the middle initial. When there is more than
